The Archbishop of Canterbury visited the university closely followed by the security forces on 5 March 2016. He was accompanied by the Archbishop and Bishops of the Anglican Church of Burundi.
Justin Welby expressed his delight in the ‘baby’ university and was excited about the impact it could make on the whole of Burundi as it grew. He spoke to the students – giving an encouraging talk and answering all their questions.
After the meeting with the students the Vice-Chancellor escorted him around the university building. The Archbishop had preached in the building when he was a canon and the building was a cathedral. It was a most encouraging visit at a time when the social conditions in Bujumbura are very difficult indeed.
