Facing the general water shortage in the area

Since October 18, the northern quarters of the economic capital Bujumbura, including Mutanga Nord, where the site of this university is located, have been facing a serious water shortage since Friday, October 19, 2024. The reason is that a large pipeline supplying this area was destroyed and the services of Regideso, the state company responsible for the distribution of water and electricity, are still working day and night to repair it.

Although the government has deployed tanker trucks to supply water to these neighborhoods, they are not in sufficient numbers to meet the needs of institutions like ours for this product essential to life.
Bujumbura Christian University needs water permanently in all toilets and latrines in order to maintain hygiene. Since all toilets are flush toilets, the quantity of water required is enormous in order to protect the entire university from the diseases that could break out.

In order not to have to stop its activities because of this problem, the university must fetch water from areas where it is available, such as in the Mukaza area.
This water is transported by car from its place to its destination in containers.

However, students, teachers and other staff struggle to get water in their homes while the university can do nothing to help them.
We salute their bravery in attending lectures and office everyday although they have to cope with the issue of water shortage in their homes.
